THE VINEYARD |
Syrah in our Rosé blend comes from Shadow Canyon
Vineyard in the York Mountain Appellation. Shadow Canyon is a mountain
vineyard located on California's central coast. Located in the East-West
corridor known as the Templeton Gap, the vineyard lies at 1,600’
elevation approximately 8 miles from the ocean. The grenache is
sourced from the Larner Vineyard located on a 150 acre family-owned
piece of land on Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley (Santa
Barbara County, California). Of these, 33 acres are planted to Rhone
grape varietals.

Shadow Canyon 2005 Rosé - 90 points
Shadow Canyon, located in the mountainous far western extension
of Paso Robles, is an undiscovered star for its Rhone varieties.
The Syrah (75% of the blend) was bled from winemaker Gary
Gibson’s more expensive estate dry wine, while the Grenache
is from the Larner Vineyard, in the warmer Santa Ynez Valley.
Fermented in stainless-tanks, the wine has elegant mouthfeel,
dry and silky. The flavors suggest mashed ripe cherry pulp,
sweet vanilla, cinnamon spice and Kir Royale, and while that
sounds decadently rich, the wine somehow achieves great finesse
and subtlety. Steve Heimoff |

2005 Rose of Syrah & Grenache - 89 Points
One of California’s most distinctive roses is this 2005 Rose
produced from Syrah and Grenache grown in both the Shadow
Canyon and Larner vineyards. A dead-ringer for an old style
Tavel, it exhibits an orange/salmon color, elegant, dry, austere
flavors, and loads of complex earthy, berry fruit intermixed
with notions of spice and forest floor. This knock-out rose
may merit an outstanding score with another 2-3 months of
bottle age. The 2004 Rose evolved for nearly two years before
it began to fade.

Shadow Canyon 2004 Rosé - 90 points
One of the finest California Rosés I have ever tasted is
Shadow Canyon's 2004 Rosé of Syrah and Grenache from Shadow
Canyon and Larner vineyards. The light salmon/copper-colored
offering (a dead-ringer an old style Tavel) possesses fabulous
texture, a big, intense, and show-stopping flavor authority.
It should be consumed over the next 6-10 months. Sadly, only
100 cases were produced. I can't wait to taste the 2005. Robert
